Travel & Visas

Visa requirements
Ireland is a member of the European Union and delegates from some countries will need a visa to travel. To find out if you need a visa to visit Ireland, please visit the Government of Ireland website. Please note that a Schengen or UK visa is not valid for Ireland. If you need a letter of invitation for a visa application, we will be happy to supply this after you have registered and we have received full payment.

Practical matters
The currency in Ireland is the Euro. In Ireland, the power plugs and sockets are of type G. The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.

By Air
Cork Airport is 8 km south of Cork city centre and is serviced by multiple international airlines, especially during the Summer period. Aer Lingus, KLM, British Airways and Lufthansa operate flights from international hubs (London, Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels) and there are many point to point flights with Ryanair in particular. A full list of destinations is available on the Cork Airport website.

By Bus
Bus connections to/from the airport and Cork City Centre are provided by Bus Eireann (route No 226 to Cork Bus Station). From the City Centre, bus route 208 comes to the UCC campus and accommodation. A taxi journey to UCC will take 10–20 minutes and will cost about €20

By Train from Dublin
Train services by Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) to Cork stop at Kent Station. Hourly intercity services to and from Dublin Heuston Station take ~ 3 hours. City bus route 205 operates between Kent Station and UCC.

By Coach from Dublin airport
There are express coach services to Dublin and Dublin Airport (operated by Aircoach and Bus Eireann)

Conference topic sand sessions are described here. There will be opportunities for registered participants to speak or present posters in all the sessions listed below.

Domestication and application of Yeast and Fungi for production of fermented foods and Beverages
While some yeast and fungi have been used by humans for thousands of years, the adoption of others for production of fermented foods and beverages is much more recent. This topic will explore evolution and population genomics of yeast and fungi, both in the wild and in the context of their domestication for our use. More broadly the application of these microbes in food and beverage fermentation is also within the scope of this session.

New hosts with biotechnological potential
There are well established microbial hosts used in the biotechnology industry for diverse applications but there is also an increasing trend towards the use of alternatives species that might have particular attributes. Advances in genome science and strain engineering offers new potential to exploit yeast and fungal biodiversity. The main theme of this session will be to consider the expanding repertoire of options for biotechnological applications.

Applying Systems Biology and knowledge of metabolism to improve industrial performance of yeast and fungal cell factories
Modern strain engineering strategies combine systems approaches that consider complete cellular metabolism with targeted remodelling of metabolic pathways. These methodologies enable the construction of new yeast and fungal cell factories. This session covers topics such as strain engineering, robustness and stress tolerance, and strain performance when scaled-up to commercial levels.

Natural and synthetic Microbial Communities
In nature, microbes typically work as part of consortia or communities whereas traditional approaches to study and exploit these microbes is generally in pure culture. In this session, we are interested in studying the interactions of yeast and fungi with other microbes, whether based on metabolism or other mechanisms. We will also cover newer topics such as synthetic ecology and community or ecosystem engineering.

Fermented Proteins, biochemicals and biomaterials
Yeast and fungi are already used for production of many different biomolecules in diverse sectors. Th sis set to increase as microbes are the key enables of the transition to a bio-based circular economy that is required to achieve sustainability goals. This session will cover topic such as production of alternative proteins, heterologous proteins generally, and bio-based molecules for the biomanufacturing sector. The emerging field of the use of fungi or yeast as functional biomaterials will also be included.

Cellular processes and pathways
An improved knowledge of cellular processes is vital if we are to have sufficient understanding of yest and fungo to properly exploit them in biotechnology. Intracellular trafficking and vesicles, cell division, protein secretion, lipid metabolism and vesicle function are among the topics that are relevant to this session

There will be special interest sessions in the following areas

Scientific publishing

COST Actions related to fungi and yeast

PYFF7 FEMS Yeast Research
Virtual Special Issue

FEMS Yeast Research is the established community journal for yeast researchers and publishes many papers that link fundamental yeast biology with biotechnology.
In association with PYFF7, this virtual special issue will bring together some of the most significant papers published in FEMS journals in the past 18 months.
These papers will complement the themes of PYFF7 and will showcase some of the exciting developments that form the central topics of the conference. Anticipated launch date: May 2019.

Journal of Fungi

In the Special Issue “Physiology of Yeasts and Filamentous Fungi, research papers and reviews about the applied and basic aspects of the physiology of yeasts and filamentous fungi are welcome.
Investigation on fundamental physiology and metabolic processes, genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity in fungal populations, and the evolution and niche adaptation of yeast and filamentous fungi could be emphasized. New trends in systems biology, metabolic engineering for biotechnological processes, and in mycobiome and interactions with other eukaryotes could also be part of this Special Issue.

Saint Georges Premier is located inside the Monza Park, at about 20 Km from Milan. Built by Tazzini in 1838, it has been renovated in the ‘60s but has maintained its historic charm, in the countryside, in a splendid setting as the Monza Park.

Ideal for weddings and banquets, with its large outdoor terrace and garden with gazebos, lends itself to events and reserved for large companies but also for cocktails to the public in summer.

The interior decor is Belgian style, with the predominant white and a classic taste that is linked to historical ties.

Very refined, studied in detail. The Saint Georges Premier is the perfect liaison between prestigious past and a place to live unique moments”
